The Cure - "Disintegration" [Deluxe Edition]

Disintegration [Deluxe Edition]

Great review of an incredible album by Nitsuh Abebe in Pitchfork today...

"Disintegration does not "scatter." It's a single, grand, dense, continual, epic trip into core stuff the Cure did well. They'd always been good at this kind of album, too. If Kiss Me is a crowded, teeming city to explore, listening to Disintegration is more like standing in the middle of some vast, empty space-- the kind of ocean or plain where you can see the horizon in all directions. You can sense that focus straight from the first minute, during which some wind chimes knock around in an empty void, and then the band bursts out with one of the most overwhelmingly grand openings I 've ever heard on a pop record-- a slow-motion, radiant synth figure of such scale that Sofia Coppola has plausibly used it to soundtrack the coronation of Louis XVI.

It's no wonder this was meaningful to a lot of teenagers: The sheer emotional grandeur of tracks like that opener, "Plainsong", make a great match for the feeling that everything in your life is all-consumingly important, whether it's your all-consuming sadness, joy, longing, or whatever".

King of Nails

I thought I might say a few words as tribute to Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse who died at the weekend. Another depressing suicide by a brilliant musician and songwriter. Like Elliot Smith, anyone who knew his story wouldn't exactly be surprised at the news but it's still a big loss that he won't be making anymore music. Not exactly prolific, mainly due to long periods of depression and illness, he managed to create a body of work that I think stands up with some of the best alternative American songwriters of the past 15 years.

His first album "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot" ranks well inside my top ten and serves as a good primer for a lot of the quality Americana bands that followed, Fleet Foxes to Beach House, Iron & Wine to Bon Iver. I got into Pavement, Will Oldham, Sebadoh, Lambchop, Mercury Rev and Yo La Tengo through Sparklehorse so I'm very sad about the news.

He had an album in the can with Steve Albini so hopefully that will see the light of day soon enough. For anyone who hasn't heard "Dark Night of The Soul", the recent album he did with Danger Mouse and a stellar list of collaborators; Wayne Coyne, Iggy Pop, Vic Chestnutt and Julian Casablancas all on board, I've posted it below as it didn't get an official release on record. Enjoy...

1. Revenge (Ft. Flaming Lips)
2. Just War (Ft. Gruff Rhys)
3. Jaykub (Ft. Jason Lytle)
4. Little Girl (Ft. Julian Casablancas)
5. Angels Harp (Ft. Black Francis)
6. Pain (Ft. Iggy Pop)
7. Star Eyes (I Can't Catch It) (feat. David Lynch)
8. Everytime I'm With You (Ft. Jason Lyttle
9. Insane Lullaby (Ft. James Mercer)
10. Daddys Gone (Ft. Nina Persson)
11. The Man Who Played God (Ft. Suzanne Vega)
12. Grim Augury (Ft. Vic Chesnutt)
13. Dark Night Of The Soul (Ft. David Lynch)

Love Is The Drug

Roxy Music are back on tour. They're playing Lovebox in London on Saturday 15th July and Bestival on the Isle of Wight so hopefully they'll make it over this way at some point. I would have gone to the Lovebox gig only my sister is getting married the same day. I tried to get her to move the wedding but some people can be very unreasonable. Wild Beasts and Booka Shade also playing the same date.

There's actually a great lineup for the Sunday too. Hercules & Love Affair, Peaches, Chromeo and Grace Jones headlining.

Primavera Sound Festival 2010

Here's the lineup so far for the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona (May 27th - 29th 2010). Tickets are 130 euros which compared to the Electric Picnic is a bargain. The festival site is 15 minutes away from the City Centre on the subway. Apartments for the week aren't too expensive and the music goes on all night (6pm to 6am). There are a few venues across the city that have bands playing the nights before and after the festival officially starts and ends so its pretty much good times for 5 days in a row. Last year was one of the best times I've ever had so I have to recommend it. Great weather, great music, great people!

Check out the festival site; http://www.primaverasound.com/ps.php?seccion=home&idioma=en
